Professor Johnson creative non-fiction and poetry classes in the English Department. He has published fifteen books, seven of them collections of poetry. His work has received numerous literary recognitions, among them a Spur Award, a Frederick Manfred Prize, a Seaton Award, and Ben Franklin Award. His most recent nonfiction book, Hunger for the Wild: America's Obsession with the Untamed West (University Press of Kansas), was honored as a Kansas Notable Book.
